What Are Spindown Dice?
The short answer is, spindown dice are D20s but with the numbers laid out much differently than on a normal D20.
The longer answer is, spindown dice were invented in 2000 for the TCG Magic: The Gathering. Their purpose is to keep track of your life total over the course of the game. Since most MTG games start with you having 20 life, Wizards of the Coast (who make both Magic and D&D) had the idea to use a 20-sided die as a life counter. On a spindown D20, each number is right next to the consecutive numbers above and below it (so 20 is next to 19; 19 is next to 18; 18 is next to 17; etc.) which makes it very easy to find a specific number on the die when you need to change your life total. Aside from the difference in number layout, it's also fairly common (though not universal) for spindown D20s to be larger than an average standard D20, both to more easily distinguish them from regular D20s and to make them more convenient to use as life counters.
